Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[.respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.[1 Tim. 3:1-7]
An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.[Titus 1:6-9]
I am quoting from the NIV. Now, this version is one version which uses gender specific language and places where the other versions say ‘brother’, they routinely state it as ‘brothers and sisters’. Even this version uses ‘men’ when it talks about those who are elders and overseers. The requirements for overseers, elders, and deacons are they are to be the husband of one wife(not wife of one husband). Women are automatically excluded from this service in the local churches. Women are not to teach or usurp authority over men.[1 Tim. 2:12] This is another requirement women can’t meet. If they are pastoring a church, they are teaching men, usurping their authority. Also, men are the head of the house, biblically speaking. The wife is to submit to her husband. Another requirement for a pastor is one who rules his(not her) house well. This is another requirement that women can not meet in regards to being an overseer.
Now, it says women are to remain silent and if she needs to ask her husband a question, she is to do so at home. However, this does not mean they are to remain mum, but churches at that time had the husbands sitting on one side of the church and women on the other side. For her to ask her husband a question, she would either have to yell at him across the room or get up and go and ask him that question. Either way, it could hamper the worship service. So, this verse should not be used as a primary reason why women can not pastor a local church. I am trying to be fair here.
I get it, however. Women want to be men’s equals, so they mitigate these passages by using Galatians 3:28 where it says there is no male nor female in Christ. Yet, Paul wrote to Timothy and Titus the requirements of who could be overseer of the loacal churches, writing this under the Spirit’s inspiration.
Now, let’s look at this through biblical history. We have 66 books contained in our bibles. None of them were penned by a female. The 12 Apostles chosen by Christ were males. The 70 disciples Jesus sent out in pairs were all men. The closest thing to a ‘leg to stand on’ by those who approve of women pastors is when Deborah was a judge of Israel. However, during that time, no men would step up to the plate, but Deborah was willing. But to take a stance on one instance of a woman being a leader is poor hermeneutics. By the same application, seeing God spoke through Baalam’s donkey, ppl can use a donkey, too.
There are many women in the bible who did a great service for God. Ruth, Rahab, Esther, Deborah, Lydia, Priscilla(Prisca), just to name a few, have been spoken of very favorably. But none of them were pastors of a church, and only Deborah was a leader of God’s ppl.
So, I know the overwhelming evidence is that any church with a woman pastor, is not a biblical church, and not even close.
